Our Favorite Holiday Memories

Posted to: General News by Lorin Laxton on Nov 29, 2012

With December right around the corner, the holidays are quickly approaching! Not only is the excitment of exchanging gifts and baking holiday cookies steadily increasing in our neck of the woods, but we're also growing nostalgic and remembering holidays past.

In order to celebrate this festive and reflecive season, we wanted to share some of our favorite holiday moments with you! We hope you enjoy.

My father is from Holland, and we always put out our wooden shoes for the reindeer food. Carrots, apples, etc. or various items from the fridge. The Dutch also celebrate ‘Old Christmas’ on Dec. 6th where they exchange small gifts on that day, and we sometimes like to remember it. And, instead of calling him Santa Clause, we refer to him with his name in Holland, ‘Cinter Claus’

Some of my personal favorite memories are opening presents, making haystack cookies, picking gifts for kids, wrapping gifts, holiday crafts, and Ashley Daniel’s homemade Baileys that we drink from the crystal cordial glasses mom only takes down from the china cabinet once every year.
My favorite Catering Works memories revolve around gingerbread houses, planning holiday menus, creating holiday cocktails, like last year we made “Holiday Jitos” a Mojito made with fresh mint & pomegranate seeds served in a Martini glass garnished with a bling-y poinsettia charm!

Here are a few of my favorite things: Building gingerbread cottages with the kids; seeing their creativity is inspiring to me and let’s me experience childhood like I never had. Also, hot chocolate with homemade marshmallows; it’s the perfect mix of chocolate and comfort! Mostly, the excitement of pushing myself to the limit… I love helping in the bakeshop! The mass production of sugar, flour, and fat is the best smell ever!

I love taking the kids to see Santa,  picking out our Christmas tree from the same small farm stand for the last 6 years, and making Christmas presents. However, my favorite memory is making a Santa Clause character with my sister and mom out of wooden spools, felt and cotton balls!

My grandma and grandpa always came down to visit every Christmas for several weeks, so my holiday really started when we went to pick them up at the airport. Grandma would always take my brother and I shopping for new clothes, but we were never allowed to wear them until after Christmas. We had to fold them nicely and put them under the tree, but we were allowed to wear one outfit to Midnight Mass.
When my brother was old enough, by my grandfather's standards, he bought him a 22 rifle. My always tried to keep the presents even, so I got a 13’ black and white TV for my room. I was only about 10 years old and what a surprise it was! That television was with me all the way thru college.
